 What Is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by feelings of sadness, irritability, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in pleasurable activities. It impairs one’s ability to concentrate, poses difficulties in completing everyday tasks, and often leads to social withdrawal.

Depression also results in persistent fatigue, changes in appetite, and disruptive sleep patterns with either an increase or decrease in the latter two.

It is important to note that Depression is a mental illness and living with depression can be challenging for the person undergoing it. Only a mental health professional who is licensed can carry out psychological evaluations to offer a diagnosis. Depression can be treated with the right treatment with an aim of improving the quality of life.



Symptoms of Depression 


Following are the Symptoms of depression:-

  • Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain
  • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
  • Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
  • Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
  • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches

  • Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. Symptoms of a depressive episode can include loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, change in weight, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping energy loss, feelings of worthlessness, and thoughts of death or suicide.
  • 17.3 million adults in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode (7.1% of all US adults).
  • Personal or family history of depression, major life changes, trauma, stress, and certain medications can contribute to a higher risk of developing depression.
  • 3.2 million adolescents in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode (13.3% of the US population aged 12 to 17).
  • Anxiety and depression disorders are closely related. Nearly 50% of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

  How Medical Cannabis helps in Depression?


According to the research, depressive disorder is indicated through a malformed behavior in the monoamine system that is the neural network responsible for emotion regulation. The Monoamine system has two significant components, namely dopamine, and serotonin. These two constituents are associated with depressive disorders. Repressed transmission and decline in levels of serotonin and dopamine are associated with Depression.

Medical Marijuana has two primary constituents, THC and CBD, that act on brain functioning and increases serotonin to treat Depression.
